Frequently Asked Questions

What mental health services are available in Minnesota?

Newport Healthcare and PrairieCare offer a full continuum of these services for children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and families.

How do I know whether I need inpatient or outpatient care?

The right level of care depends on your symptoms, safety, daily functioning, and support needs. Inpatient care provides 24/7 support for people experiencing a mental health crisis, while outpatient care allows you to live at home while receiving treatment. A mental health professional can help determine the most appropriate level of care.

Where are PrairieCare locations in Minnesota?

PrairieCare offers services throughout Minnesota, including Brooklyn Park, Edina, Maplewood, Maple Grove, Mankato, Minneapolis, Rochester, and Woodbury. Services vary by location.

Where are Newport Healthcare residential locations in Minnesota?

Do I need a referral to get mental health services?

Referral requirements vary by program, insurance plan, and individual needs. Many services can be accessed directly by contacting the program, while some may require a referral or authorization from a healthcare provider or insurance company.

Does insurance cover treatment?

Many mental health services are covered by health insurance, but coverage varies by plan, service, and level of care. Newport Healthcare and PrairieCare are in-network providers for most major insurance plans.

What happens during a mental health screening or assessment?

A mental health screening or assessment helps a care team understand your symptoms, concerns, history, and current needs. You may discuss your mental health, medications, daily functioning, safety, and goals for treatment. The care team uses this information to recommend next steps and the level of care that may be most helpful.
