Mental Health Treatment Program for Young Adults in Minnesota

Young Adult Mental Health

Young adulthood is often a period of transition and upheaval. As a result, young adults ages 18–35 experience depression and anxiety at higher rates than any other age group. These difficulties can lead to challenges in maintaining schoolwork, work life, relationships, and self-care.

PrairieCare, Minnesota’s leading psychiatric care provider, meets you where you’re at to support you throughout the myriad changes of young adulthood. We address underlying mental health conditions, teach lifelong skills, and provide comprehensive treatment for a range of disorders.

Warning Signs of Poor Mental Health in Young Adults

If you’re experiencing mental instability, the best thing you can do is seek professional help. A therapist, primary care provider, or psychiatrist can provide immediate resources and direct you toward comprehensive care with sustainable and long-term results.

The following symptoms indicate poor mental health:

  • Drastic emotional or mood changes, such as irritability, sadness, or worry
  • Withdrawal from friends or social activities
  • Substance use to numb or avoid pain
  • Changes in sleeping habits
  • Constant fatigue or exhaustion
  • Inability to concentrate, focus, or keep up with daily activities
  • Feeling overwhelmed, excessively stressed, or dysregulation
  • Relationship problems or changes in libido
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

If these symptoms persist for more than a few weeks or worsen over time, seek professional support. You don’t have to go through this alone—help is available. Early intervention can provide you with much-needed resources and prevent a mental health crisis.

If you’re thinking about harming yourself or others, or you’ve acted on this impulse, go to the nearest ER or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 immediately.

How Young Adults Can Get Mental Health Support Right Away

We understand how difficult it can be when you or a loved one is experiencing emergency mental health symptoms. Through our Family First admissions process, you don’t have to wait hours in the ER waiting room—instead, parents and patients over 18 can call our team at 952-826-8424 to start immediate treatment at our hospital for anyone 35 and younger.

What Are Common Mental Health Disorders for Young Adults?

New life stressors like attending college, moving away from home, forming new relationships, and starting or changing careers can overwhelm many young adults. The new stressors, combined with unresolved trauma and underlying mental health issues, can trigger symptoms or make them worse.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1 in 5 US adultss live with at least one mental illness. In Minnesota, nearly a third of all adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression in the past year. Common mental health disorders among young adults include anxiety, depression, neurodevelopmental disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and personality disorders.

Anxiety

Over 19% of US adults live with an anxiety disorder and impacting nearly a third of adults in their lifetime. Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, panic disorder, and social anxiety. An anxiety disorder may arise as a primary condition, or secondary to another condition. Depression, substance abuse, and eating disorders may develop by trying to cope with their anxiety.

Causes of depression include genetics, life stressors, trauma or PTSD, substance use, and other factors. Depression symptoms in young adults include loss of interest in usual activities, low energy, and impaired daily functioning.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Unresolved trauma from childhood or recent events can lead to PTSD. PTSD impacts physical and emotional well-being and can severely impair daily functioning. People struggling with PTSD are much more likely to experience co-occurring mental health conditions, such as substance use, depression, anxiety, and self-harm behaviors.

Personality Disorders

Personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder, impact around 9% of US adults. Personality disorders are often misdiagnosed because the symptoms are similar to the signs of mood disorders. However, personality disorders require specialized care because they can be severe and debilitating, with suicide rates 50 times greater than the general population. Therefore, early assessment and treatment of a personality disorder is crucial.

Our Levels of Care for Young Adults in Minnesota

PrairieCare offers the following young adult services in the Twin Cities and Southern MN.

  • Clinic and Outpatient Services: In-person and telehealth clinic services may be for you if your symptoms impair your ability to function, but aren’t severe enough to warrant more intensive programming. We support you with weekly therapy, medication management, and psychoeducation.

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) runs five days a week with full-day therapeutic programming. Focused on ongoing therapeutic support, PHP is for you if you need more support than partial outpatient services can provide, but don’t require 24/7 stabilization.

  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): PrairieCare’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) runs five days a week with partial-day programming. This level of care is ideal if you need more than weekly therapy and medication management, but you can still maintain daily activities and routines

  • Inpatient Hospitalization Program for Young Adults: Our inpatient hospitalization program provides 24/7 safety and stabilization in a hospital setting. This program is for patients aged 35 and under who need short-term, immediate, round-the-clock care following a mental health crisis.

Specialty Young Adult Outpatient Treatment

  • Perinatal & Maternal Mental Health Programs: Our Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at our Brooklyn Park Medical Office Building focuses on the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders for pregnant women and new moms. Patients work with our skilled staff to build a treatment plan to learn skills for emotion regulation, symptom management and more.
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): TMS is an innovative, non-invasive procedure for people with treatment-resistant depression that uses magnetic pulses to increase activity in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, gradually gradually lifting the symptoms of depression. Treatment takes about 20 minutes over 36-37 sessions for about 8-12 weeks with effective results.

I‘m so thankful for PraireCare! The staff were very welcoming and supportive and always listened and did everything they could to help me. I only spent a week there and I feel 100x more confident in myself and better than I did before. Thank you to all the staff for making it as much of a pleasurable experience as possible.

Patient, Inpatient Hospital

The level of communication was truly remarkable. I never had to question how my son was doing or what was going on during his time at PrairieCare. No matter what was happening – we knew about it, and that makes all the difference!

PrairieCare Youth Programming, Parent

Dr. Peterson did such an amazing job of asking questions my husband and I never even thought about to try to get to the root of which symptoms were physical/mental and which were possible side effects of medication(s) my son was taking. He took time to listen to everything we had to say, I never felt rushed or dismissed on any of my concerns. We spoke weekly and while he made suggestions, he made sure we knew the decisions were ours to make – giving us complete control on how to proceed with our son’s medications.
