What Are Common Mental Health Disorders Among Adults?
The pressures of adulthood can be overwhelming. If you’re in your late 20s to mid-30s, you may be struggling with what the American Surgeon General called an ongoing “loneliness epidemic.” Career stresses, global issues like war and climate change, and difficulty maintaining community and relationships can combine to impair mental and physical health over time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the three most common mental health disorders in America are anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Statistics about common disorders include the following:
- Anxiety, depression, and PTSD account for 30% of all mental illnesses throughout the nation
- 28% of Minnesota adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression last year
- Over 19% of US adults live with an anxiety disorder.
- 33% of adults experience an anxiety disorder at some point during their life
- Depression impacts more than 9% of adults over the age of 26
- PTSD is estimated to impact 12.5% of people or more, with much higher rates for veterans
Other common mental disorders include neurodevelopmental disorders (such as ADHD), bipolar disorder, and personality disorders.
The Link Between Adult Substance Use and Mental Health
Adults who live with an underlying mental health disorder are at a higher risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD) as a maladaptive way to cope with their symptoms. This is called a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), around 21.5 million US adults have a dual diagnosis. That means that nearly 40% of all adults who experience a mental illness also struggle with substance use disorder.
Patients being treated for mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD often misuse substances such as:
- Alcohol
- Prescription drugs
- Opioids
- Tobacco
- Stimulants
- Marijuana
- Hallucinogens
Substance use disorder can have a tremendous impact on quality of life. It often begins as a way of self-medicating untreated mental health symptoms, but it can quickly spiral out of control. People with SUD tend to experience extreme compulsive behavior, stigma, and shame around their substance use. When left untreated, SUD impairs physiological, biological, physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Warning Signs of Poor Mental Health in Adults
Many adults live with untreated trauma or ongoing mental health disorders. However, no matter what you’ve been through or how long you’ve been struggling, help is available. If you’re experiencing mental health challenges, the best thing you can do is seek professional support. A therapist, primary care provider, or psychiatrist can provide you with resources and recommend care options.
Signs of Mental Health Issues Include:
- Excessive irritability, sadness, anger, or worry
- Unusual lack of interest in socializing or usual hobbies
- New or increased substance use
- Persistent fatigue, exhaustion, or changes in sleeping patterns
- Inability to concentrate
- Difficulty maintaining daily activities
- Feeling overwhelmed or excessively stressed
- Changes in relationships
- Unexplained aches and pains
- Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
If these symptoms persist for more than a few weeks or get worse over time, seek professional mental health services. You deserve the support to build a fulfilling life.
If you’re thinking about harming yourself or others, or you’ve acted on this urge, go to the nearest ER or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 immediately.
