About a year ago, Minnesota joined dozens of states in suing Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook. The lawsuit aimed at the company using tactics that are considered harmful to teen mental health according to many experts, including PrairieCare psychiatrist Joshua Stein, MD.
Now, Instagram is implementing changes for users under 18, with a focus on enhancing safety and privacy for children online. These changes include private accounts for users 18 and younger and new tools for adult supervision. Dr. Stein discusses the mental health impact of social media and offer his advice on how caretakers can actively support kids in staying safe online.
