Meet Our 2023 Top Doctors!

Apr 14, 2023 by News at PrairieCare

We are honored to announce three of our psychiatrists have been recognized by Mpls. St. Paul Magazine as Top Doctors Rising Stars for 2023! Congratulations to Dr. Brent Nelson, Dr. Sandra Quinn, and Dr. Joshua Stein for receiving such a big achievement!

The Top Doctors: Rising Stars is recognition specific to up-and-coming physicians who have been licensed to practice for 10 years or less. The list is created by peer nominations and evaluations based on their professional history and recognition. Doctors with the highest points are included on the list.

Our vision as an organization is to transform psychiatric care and this team truly represents innovation in mental health. Thank you for your continued integrity, compassion, and determination you demonstrate toward our patients and their families during some of their most difficult times. You are a guiding force for so many within the field of mental health and in the lives of our patients.

Dr. Nelson, Chief Medical Information Officer and Adult Interventional Psychiatrist

Dr. Nelson has had a long focus on brain stimulation, primarily Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), to minimize symptoms for complex mental health conditions and injuries. Through a clinical research fellowship, serving as a full-time faculty member and as Executive Director for TMS at the University of Minnesota and Minnesota VA Medical Center, he has brought extensive knowledge and innovation to our continuum of care.

As an interventional psychiatrist at our Edina location, Dr. Nelson works with patients who have Major Depressive Disorder that is treatment resistant. Every day he works with patients that are finding a new light in their life, to see they can reach their goals, and with the help of innovative technology, manage their condition.

Check out his recent interview with KSTP’s Minnesota Live for World Bipolar Day, TMS, and the possibility of utilizing TMS for the treatment of bipolar disorder.

Dr. Quinn, Adult Interventional Psychiatrist

Dr. Quinn has a passion for understanding and working with patients who have complex mental health conditions to create a path to healing. She uses medication, psychotherapy techniques, and neuromodulation to unlock new potential for the patient—even when it doesn’t always seem possible for them.

“The most rewarding aspect of my job is seeing patients get better. Many patients feel hopeless about their condition and do not think they can get better, but they can. Mental health conditions are treatable.”

When medication and therapy aren’t enough, Dr. Quinn can provide the treatment of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment resistant depression to qualified patients at our Woodbury location. Dr. Quinn is an interventional psychiatrist and is a certified BrainsWay Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) provider. Using the BrainsWay TMS helmet, magnetic pulses are delivered to the patient’s brain in short 20-minute sessions. Over about 8-12 weeks, the majority of patients will  see a reduction of their depression symptoms by at least 50% and a large portion of those patients achieve remission from their depression.

In addition to administering TMS treatments, Dr. Quinn is the attending physician at the Woodbury Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for adults as well as Clinic and Outpatient Services. Adult PHP provides intensive mental health programming during the day for 4 weeks when someone is experiencing severe mental health symptoms that do not require inpatient hospitalization. In PHP patients learn the skills to accomplish their goals through structured group programming, individual therapy, and medication management.

Dr. Stein, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Dr. Stein is passionate about our community and uses his skills as a psychiatrist to address mental health concerns even outside of the clinic. He works with patients of all ages focusing on autism, anxiety, family dynamics, emerging personality disorders, depression, and OCD. Ultimately, he takes pride in being part of patients’ journeys as they find a unique path to healing that fits their life.

Dr. Stein is the clinical director and attending physician at the Brooklyn Park Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Our PHP program provides treatment through assessment, therapy, and stabilization to find a healthy balance in daily life activities. The goal is to provide patient-centered care that focuses on increased functioning at home, in school, and in the community for sustainable outcomes.

In addition to his work with patients, Dr. Stein is active in our community to bring awareness to a variety of mental health concerns, primarily in our schools. From teachers in Special Education experiencing burnout, to working with athletic directors to learn suicide prevention tactics, Dr. Stein truly wants the best for our youth with mental health at the center.

The Rising Stars are listed in the April issue of Mpls. St. Paul Magazine.
