PrairieCare offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) for children, adolescents, and adults. IOP is an ideal level of care for individuals struggling with symptoms of mental illness that are interfering with their daily living and are not manageable in weekly therapy or medication management.

Access to care begins with an assessment to identify the treatment approach that could be most beneficial in treatment. IOP offers multiple tracks of therapeutic programming including the treatment modalities of: Adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy (A-DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Art Therapy integrating the needs of those living with mental illness.

What makes IOP effective for mental health conditions?

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is an essential transitional level of care within our full continuum of services. For people of all ages experiencing common mental health disorders, such as anxiety or depression, IOP provides partial-day mental health support. At the same time, patients can maintain their regular schedule, such as school or work.

For about three hours a day, patients are guided by a multidisciplinary team through evidence-based treatment for psychiatric symptoms. Our IOP can serve as a step-down option for patients at our residential treatment program or inpatient hospital. Or it can provide a more rigorous care level for someone receiving weekly outpatient therapy. By receiving mental health services while engaging in daily activities, patients build management tools that work for their lives.

Services are provided by our professional team here at PrairieCare and include:

Each year, nearly 1 in 5 new mothers will experience symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety. While over 80% of new mothers experience mood swings within the first few weeks, known as the “Baby Blues,” some new parents continue to have feelings of sadness, anger, and worry that persist for months. This can affect both new mothers and fathers/partners throughout pregnancy and the first year of being a new parent.

Testimonials

I cannot express my gratitude enough for this program or my team. I was absolutely hopeless and broken. They changed that in me and changed my family unit. They are so good at their jobs. They have changed my life. “Job” or not, they saw me before I even saw myself. That can’t be taught. That is THEM, who they are.

FAQs

What does IOP stand for?

In mental health, IOP is an acronym for Intensive Outpatient Program. It is considered a more rigorous level of care than weekly therapy and medication management.

What is IOP versus PHP?

The most significant difference between the Intensive Outpatient Program and Partial Hospitalization Program is the time commitment. PHP is a full-day program and can serve as a step-down program from an inpatient hospital setting. Meanwhile, an IOP is a partial-day program where patients can maintain other daily activities and routines.

What is IOP versus outpatient care?

Technically, an IOP is an outpatient program. In mental health, IOP is an acronym for Intensive Outpatient Program, a partial-day program for four to five days per week where a patient returns home after each treatment day. There are various outpatient levels of care depending on the severity of symptoms a patient is experiencing. IOP is more substantial than a clinic outpatient program that includes weekly psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medication management. However, IOP is less intensive than a Partial Hospitalization Program, which consists of a full day of treatment for five days per week supported by a multidisciplinary team for patients who have severe mental health symptoms.

What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient?

In an inpatient hospital, patients receive 24/7 care for safety and stabilization. Patients participate in a full-day treatment schedule to address immediate symptoms and stay overnight at the inpatient facility. By contrast, outpatient programs are partial or full-day programs where a patient attends treatment but returns home at the end of the day.

How long is a typical IOP?

On average, a typical Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for mental health is 5–8 weeks (about two months). Patients in the program participate in treatment multiple days a week for about 3 hours per day. At PrairieCare, we use thorough assessments and individualized goal setting to determine the proper treatment plan for each patient.

No-cost mental health screenings via phone are offered to anybody seeking psychiatric services at PrairieCare.
